History and current condition

In 1966 I bought Lady be Good from Mersea, and renamed her Alcyone after a family collier that regularly sailed down to the NE coal ports to collect coal for Cliff Quay power station Ipswich.

The name Alcyone comes from a constellation of seven stars...Captain Dale had seven daughters, one born in the Butt and Oyster pub at Pin Mill...my great, great Aunts, one called Alice.

The sailmaker, Powells at Pin Mill were also part of the Family. Tom and Alice Powell retired to run the Station Hotel at Wivenhoe as tenants of the Cobbold brewery. (The Cobbolds own Ipswich Town FC.)  My Mother lived there in WW2 when on leave. John Laing (previous owner)

April 2001:
Alcyone has been entrusted into the stewardship of Dennis Ilsley and should be contacted if you would like to sail in her this season.

March 2013: Alcyone purchased by association.
May 2013: Sold to Nigel Cook
April 2014: Launched

2020: Launched

2023: Launched and raced regularly
